Functional Training Facilities are the Gyms of the Future
At Perform Better this past year the great strength coach Al Vermeil (he is the only strength coach in the world who has a championship ring from both the NFL and NBA, San Francisco 49ers and Chicago Bulls) said during his presentation, “Just because and exercise exists doesn’t mean you have to do it.” And that couldn’t stand truer for many of the common exercises you will find people doing upon walking into any “big box” traditional health club. Clubs that are filled with acres of weight machines are the equivalent of 8 tracks in the music industry. Not only are machines out of style they can also lead to and promote injuries.
The clubs of the 21st Century are transforming their facilities into functional training facilities by removing the machines and cardio equipment and replacing them with functional training tools that help to improve our physiques and make our bodies more resilient. Walk into any of these facilities and you will find things like: medicine balls, free weights, stability balls, kettle bells, TRX’s, Valslides, and conditioning ropes and the members performing exercises you may never have seen before, but look fun!
If you’ve been working out or are just starting to workout take the 21st Century approach and be amazed at the results you will find!
Get started today with a 21st Century Functional Fitness program that is designed specifically for you by calling to 724-698-7897 to get started with your 30-Day Trial Membership for only $39.

Maybe It's Not A Lack Of Will Power After All
Recent studies have identified a hunger hormone called Ghrelin. This hormone is one of the substances secreted in the stomach that carries messages to the brain and digestive system. Its primary function is to tell the brain the body needs fed. Levels will spike before eating and decrease after food has been eaten. Without food consumption, levels remain elevated for extended periods of time, which increases the urge to eat. Skipping meals and not eating breakfast puts us at an elevated level and that promotes accumulations of lipids in the visceral fatty tissue, which is the most harmful. Visceral fatty tissue, also known as abdominal fat or organ fat, contributes to high blood pressure and type 2 diabetes. Also, fat that accumulates around the liver increases the risk of developing resistance to insulin.
Ghrelin served an important purpose. It was Mother Nature’s way of telling us to eat when food was only occasionally abundant so we could survive the next famine. Unfortunately, as our bodies have evolved and we now have access to an overabundance of food we have not escaped this trigger. Our bodies still attempt to fight its perceived life-threatening weight loss, which was helpful in days of feast or famine.
More research is being done on this hormone, but in the mean time, the best way to control this is to eat 5-6 small meals per day and always starting your day off with breakfast. This controls the levels of ghrelin and thus avoids triggering the binges of high-fat/high-carbohydrate foods. Keeping yourself moderately full and avoiding getting overly hungry should keep everything in check.

Fitness For 2010
The bad news is another year is gone, the good news is its a new year and we will continue to learn from research and just plain old experience what works and what is most effective when it comes to exercise. In attending different conferences throughout the year I have learned so much information to help my clients and myself. What we do here is a lot different than any other facilities around the area and there are always new big club facilities going up all the time with shiny new machines that look so impressive when you walk in. These clubs do well despite them using the same techniques that worked well in the 90’s but have become outdated. Its discouraging to attend these workshops with what are arguably the best minds in the exercise industry and learn from them to come home and implement these techniques but still have people wasting time and money on old weight training techniques that don’t get you the results you are looking for.
I came into work this morning and turned on my computer to find on my homepage a video from the CBS morning show segment with Harry Smith and Adam Campbell from Men’s Health talking about Debunking Exercise Myths. Everything discussed was right on with what we believe here. Here is the link if you would like to watch:
cbsnews.com/video/watch/?id=6057353n&tag=related;photovideo
They discussed how crunches are not the best way to target abs that’s the 90’s, the plank works the entire core targeting abdominals more efficient and also works low back.
The point I was most excited about was reaffirming our position that they do not need the treadmill or elliptical anymore. Weight-training can equal the calorie burn of running a 6 minute mile pace! We can get you results even with using just your body weight and without you having to find time to fit in an extra hour to do your cardio. In one hour we have condensed the benefits of soft tissue work, weight training, caloric expenditure, and yoga.
For some reason people may believe this more readily since someone on TV is backing our programs up. Who knows, we actually may be leading Fitness into the 21stCentury!

Recovery & Regeneration Seminar
The topic of the seminar is Recovery and Regeneration. “This is an area that we’ve found to be very overlooked with regular gym goers,” says Josh Proch of Defined Fitness. “ As a result we decided that it would be a good idea to offer a seminar that will help people keep their joints and muscles healthy and prevent injuries,” added Proch.
The seminar will take place on Thursday, January 14th at 7 p.m. at Defined Fitness located at 1429 New Butler Rd. New Castle PA 16101. There is no fee to attend. Anyone interested in attending should contact Defined Fitness at 724-698-7897 to reserve a spot.
